"Mỹ Lai to Rafah" came out on Friday, Oct 4th and a portion of Band Camp sales for this song will go to Doctors without Borders. It is currently only available on Band Camp until the full album comes out next year on Exotic Fever Records. Would be honored if you could listen, purchase, and share. The link is in my bio.
I wanna share how I came up with the art. I combined the North and South Vietnamese flags, and added colors from the Palestinian flag, with an image of Vietnam's highest mountain, Fansipan. 🇻🇳
I've spent a good amount of time this year working through ancestral trauma, triggered by what's been happening in Palestine, and part of that process included writing and recording this song. No, I do not have family who were victims of the My Lai massacre, I was making a connection between instances of US-backed imperialistic violence in Vietnam to that in Palestine. It's an expression of rage, a commitment to living and thriving in spite of, and a statement of solidarity with colonized peoples of the world.
Super thankful to Peter Tietjen who recorded me on drums at Pacific Studio here in Tacoma, and since he's a real pro drummer I got him to play some militarized snare on it.
This is the first song released under Star Matriarch that was not on the original Red Ship album. But will be in the reissue. I'm so very proud of it.
